Highlights His life was short, his art outstanding. Franz Peter Schubert was born on 31 January 1797 in Vienna. He became a choirboy at the Vienna Court Orchestra and was initially taught by his father, an elementary school teacher. At the age of 17 he composed his first opera, when he died at the age of 31, he left over 600 works and is one of the most prolific composers of his time.
Schubert created a diverse body of work in just 15 years and his works are among the central pieces in the transition from Classic to Romanticism. It includes chamber and piano pieces, stage works, orchestral and church music as well as choral works. The best-known works include Rosamunde, the songs "Heidenröslein", "Erlkönig" and "Die Schöne Müllerin", Stabat Mater and the 7th Symphony "Unfinished". Schubert's music can be used in a variety of ways in film scoring and underscores epochs and emotions.
